COSMETIC DENTISTRY OPTIONS - Cosmetic dentists use a variety of techniques to create a more pleasing smile. The following is a list of common cosmetic dentistry options.

TEETH WHITENING

Teeth whitening, or tooth bleaching, is a cosmetic dentistry procedure designed to remove stains and discoloration, as well as lighten pigmentation within the teeth. The level of whiteness that can be achieved will depend on the level of discoloration of the teeth and how they came to be stained. Teeth that are brown or yellow due to coffee, tea, or smoking stains will generally lighten four to five shades. Teeth that are gray due to pigmentation within the teeth will lighten two to three shades.

Teeth whitening can be done in one of two ways: laser bleaching or at-home tooth bleaching kits provided by a cosmetic dentist. Both of these methods are done under a cosmetic dentist's supervision so that the chance of negative side effects is reduced.

PORCELAIN VENEERS - A ceramic shell applied to the front of the teeth to create a whiter appearance.

Porcelain veneers are one cosmetic dentistry option available to correct stained, chipped, or crooked teeth. Veneers are made of porcelain, a ceramic material that is applied to the front of the teeth. To accomplish the desired effect, porcelain veneers take approximately three visits to the cosmetic dentist's office. With a prelimanary exam to make sure that porcelain veneers are the right choice. During this visit, the cosmetic dentist will discuss the advantages and limitations of porcelain veneers.

DENTAL IMPLANTS - Artificial teeth used to replace missing teeth.

Dental implants are a cosmetic dentistry option designed to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial teeth that are implanted into the jaw, having the look and feel of natural teeth.

DENTAL CROWNS - a cap used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. The cap is shaped to look like the rest of the tooth.

A crown, also known as a cap, is a tooth-shaped covering that is placed over a tooth that has been badly decayed or damaged. Crowns are generally used when the damage or decay is so extensive that filling materials cannot make the tooth strong enough. In addition, crowns can be used to hold a bridge in place and to cover discolored or misshaped teeth.

Types of Dental Crowns - There are three types of dental crowns:

  • Metal - this type of crown can be made of gold alloy, palladium, nickel alloy, or chromium alloy. Metal crowns are ideal for use on the back teeth.
  • Ceramic - Ceramic crowns look like normal teeth and are ideal for use on the front teeth.
  • Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) - PFM crowns are stronger than ceramic crowns and look like normal teeth.

BRIDGES - Two crowns and a dental implant used to fill in a gap where a tooth is missing. The crowns are placed on the two teeth on either side of the gap, and are connected to the dental implant that fills the empty space.

Bridges are one method to fill a gap created by a missing tooth (or teeth). A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth in between. Natural teeth, dental implants, or a combination of natural teeth and dental implants can be used to support the bridge.

LASER TOOTH WHITENING - Removes stains and discoloration

Teeth whitening, or tooth bleaching, is a cosmetic dentistry procedure designed to remove stains and discoloration, as well as lighten pigmentation within the teeth. Laser tooth whitening is one method that can be used to this end. It takes approximately an hour and a half to whiten the teeth with the laser and the procedure is performed in a cosmetic dentist's office.

INVISALIGN - A virtually invisible and more comfortable alternative to metal braces

Invisalign, also known as invisible braces, is a new orthodontic system that works to straighten the teeth through the use of a series of clear plastic molds (aligners). Invisalign eliminates the 'metallic smile' that is characteristic of traditional orthodontic treatment.

The Invisalign system uses computer imaging to create the aligners - the computer simulates the stages the teeth will go through until they reach their final position. The aligners are then created based on this simulation.

The number of aligners used will depend on each individual case but the average is between 18 and 30. Each removable aligner is worn for two weeks (24 hours a day, except during meals) and then the next aligner is used. This process is repeated until the teeth are in the desired position. The entire treatment takes the same amount of time as traditional braces.

It is important to note that Invisalign can sometimes cost 20-50% more than regular orthodontic treatment.

CERAMIC BRACKETS

Ceramic brackets are one type of brackets that can be used if a patient is worried about aesthetic appearance. Ceramic brackets are translucent, so they blend in with your natural tooth color. This means that unlike traditional stainless steel braces, your smile will not look 'metallic.' In addition, ceramic brackets are designed so that they won't stain or discolor over long periods of time.

DAMON BRACKETS

A new advancement in the field of orthodontics is known as the Damon Bracket. Invented by dentist Damon Dwight, this new type of bracket utilizes "sliding-door" technology known as "self-ligation" that allows the wire to slide back and forth within the bracket. This creates less friction and results in more comfort for the patient. In addition, Damon brackets cut down on the treatment time and the number of adjustments that need to be performed
